Equity Statement

The Edmonton Council for Early Learning and Care is dedicated to leading by example in creating an integrated and equitable system of early learning and care. Guided by fundamental human rights principles, we are committed to ensuring that all children, regardless of their background or circumstances, have access to high-quality, inclusive, and culturally responsive care.

Recognizing the importance of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit perspectives, we actively seek their guidance to address the unique and distinct needs of Indigenous children and families. Upholding the right to self-determination is crucial to our efforts in advancing reconciliation and supporting Indigenous communities in controlling their educational systems.

We believe that true equity requires engaging individuals and families from diverse cultures in all aspects of decision-making, service delivery, and policy development. By overcoming barriers posed by dominant cultures, we strive to make our services accessible and welcoming to all.

Our commitment extends to identifying and supporting families who may be underserved, ensuring they receive the necessary resources to help their children thrive. We recognize that every child deserves access to high-quality early learning and care, and we tailor our support to meet the specific needs of diverse communities, including Indigenous families, newcomers, foster children, and children with different abilities.

To achieve meaningful and lasting outcomes, we base our policies and practices on research-based evidence, always aiming for the highest standards of quality. We are dedicated to providing equitable and timely access to services, addressing the challenges posed by language, culture, discrimination, and power imbalances through advocacy and support.

We understand that eliminating childhood poverty requires systemic change and a commitment to eradicating family poverty. By working collaboratively across all levels of government and with community partners, we are committed to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to succeed.

As a leading voice in early learning and care, the Edmonton Council for Early Learning andCare is committed to driving transformative change and fostering a just, equitable, and inclusivefuture for all children and families in our community.
